It could well be overheating, it's a common way for all laptops to go 
after a while.
I'm not sure how exactly how you get to it on one of those, but the 
cooling fins on the processor heatsink get full of dust & fluff quite 
quickly on most laptops. A quick dose of either cleaning them out with a 
soft paintbrush brush or a hand held vacuum cleaner should cure it. Of 
course, it's possible the fan's failed, you should hear it start when 
you're doing processor intensive stuff. If you don't, then you may need 
to fit a replacement.

For some reason, most old Toshiba drivers & stuff are on their Canadian 
Website. The Drivers & Downloads page is:-

There's often a hardware manual there or thereabouts to tell you how to 
dismantle it.
