The Gifu Renaissance Hotel is along the Nagara River. From the hotel, if you
look southeast, you will see a mountain with a castle on top. The mountain
is Mt. Kinka, and the castle was that of Oda Nobunaga, the prime mover of
Japan's 16th-century reunification after a hundred years of strife. The
castle is small, but the view is good (on a clear day you could see Nagoya)
and their is a ropeway to the top of the mountain. Near the castle is a
small "Squirrel Village" where you can feed the squirrel.

At the base of the mountain is Gifu Park, which has the ropeway to the top,
a small art museum, a small insect museum, and a decent-sized history
museum. The history museum is closed for remodeling now, but will be open by
April.

A few blocks away from the park is the largest lacquer Buddha in Japan

The Gifu Renaissance Hotel is about twenty minutes away from the train
station, by bus or taxi. Gifu station is about twenty minutes away from
Nagoya station, although there isn't much to see in Nagoya.

Apparently, there will be a bus from the Gifu Renaissance Hotel to the Expo
site, which is between Gifu and Nagoya, but to the east.
