Thanks for the detailed tutorial Frisco.

I reverted back to Win98 for now so I am just looking for some assurances if 
I try again.

I think I pretty much did all that you described except for the Windows 
Update.

I tried an NetGear card [which had a driver CD] and an Orinoco card [which 
WinXP seemed to recognize].  Both power lights came on and the transmit 
lights flickered a bit.  Then nothing.

Device manager reports that they are enabled.

Turned ZeroConfig service off/on/, etc.

They just don't see the WiFi network that is present.  [Another computer 
further away is logged n + no problem in same locaton when I went back to 
Win98.]

I'd have tried Windows Update, but there's the catch:  no WiFi: no update.

My thought was more that this dated Satellite might have had some aversion 
to WinXP SP2 since the cards are fine under Win98.
