So long as the movies are really good pRon your friend could send them to me 
and I'll check them out.

Seriously, just 'how' won't they play on a Japanese PC?  Are they actually 
readable?  Can she navigate to the VOB files in the Video_TS directory etc. 
?  Is your friend using a decent DVD player such as Power DVD?  In fact, the 
absence of DVD playback software on her computer sounds like the most 
plausible explanation.
