The problem appears to be the CDRoms firmware is bugged. Mandrake issues a standard command which the firmware reacts *badly* to. It doesn't happen with the Windows drivers obviously. Should have been found in testing by Mandrake but it's impossible to test everything. And as LG state they don't support Linux I don't think you can blame them either.
