Is it because of context? I think that since I've never really had the
word used negatively towards my son it doesn't resonate that way. The
only time it comes up here is when we say our son is half Japanese,
but even that doesn't come up (because most people can figure that out
when they see the dopey white guy and the pretty Japanese lady
standing with him). It helps, too, that the Japanese fascination in
the US makes it a fairly positive thing to be in any way associated
with Japan.
