What little I've read on this particular issue is that the commander
of the group of boats heading up river that day says that they weren't
under fire and that Kerry essentially fabricated that part of the
story. Two things that I find interesting are that the commander also
received a bronze (I think) star for his actions and the report
mentioned bravery under fire, and I always thought a commander had
some input into the giving out of awards and such. The commander's
rebuttal to the 'under fire' comment is that he thought he received
his award for saving the lives of the crew members of a river boat
that had struck a mine, and not for being under fire (why he didn't
know that is beyond me), and he says Kerry must have been responsible
for those words being in the original report (which, again, I thought
he would have had a part in drafting, since he was the officer in
charge and Kerry a lowly, fresh lieutenant. But I don't know all the
details. Actually what I've read appears to be a lot of sour grapes
because of Kerry's protests.
