I remember drooling over tapes sent by my family. They often flickered
between light and dark, had lines in them, if they made it through the
mail system intact at all. And while all my friends in the US had
dozens of channels, I had all of three or four, depending on how the
wind was blowing at the time.

I've read and even supported the theory that the arguments made in the
article are one reason why many women don't more actively pursue
greater equality (along with the tremendous social barriers). And I
think those arguments are a good reason to not pursue certain
occupations if that's your desire and you can afford to do so. But
what the author misses is that women don't even have the choice to be
equal with men, and even though laws say otherwise and 'technically'
they have the same options, the reality is very different,
particularly outside of Tokyo.
