The cable that connects to either your broadband router or other

It's an RJ-45 connector, there's a picture of one here:-

If you unplug it, you'll lose your network connection, and probably your 
internet connection too, but they should come back as soon as you plug 
it back in.

It looks similar to, but larger than, a standard modem cable connector.

If you can tell us the model number of your laptop, we can tell you for 
sure which cable it is & where it should be plugged in.

To be honest, though, if you can't recognise a network cable, possibly 
because you didn't set up the system yourself, it might be worth your 
while paying a professional to give you some personal tuition before you 
start disconnecting things.
