Five of six Algerians must be released after nearly seven years of
captivity at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, a
federal judge ruled on Thursday in a setback for the Bush administration,
U.S. District Judge Richard Leon ruled from the bench after holding the
first hearings under a landmark Supreme Court ruling in June that gave
Guantanamo prisoners the legal right to challenge their continued
confinement.

New friendly fire coverup: Army shreds files on dead soldiers

Last month, Salon published a story reporting that U.S. Army Pfc. Albert
Nelson and Pfc. Roger Suarez were killed by U.S. tank fire in Ramadi,
Iraq, in late 2006, in an incident partially captured on video, but that
an Army investigation instead blamed their deaths on enemy action. Now
Salon has learned that documents relating to the two men were shredded
hours after the story was published.

Cheney-targeting DA is no-show

Willacy County prosecutor Juan Angel Guerra stumped a presiding judge
and attorneys for clients as high up as Vice President Dick Cheney when
he failed to show up to court on his own grand jury$B!G(Bs indictments.
His office manager told the judge she had been trying to reach Guerra
all day. When Ba$(D??(Bales asked if she were concerned for Guerra$B!G(Bs safety
she said she would not know how to answer the question. Guerra$B!G(Bs cell
phone message box was full much of the day, but an assistant who
answered the line late Wednesday said he was not ill.

Why the U.S. blinked on its troop agreement with Iraq

Although the Pentagon officially has welcomed the new accord on a U.S.
troop withdrawal from Iraq, senior military officials are privately
criticizing President Bush for giving Iraq more control over U.S.
military operations for the next three years than the U.S. had ever
contemplated.
This official, and others, all who spoke anonymously to be candid,
offered a first glimpse into the dynamics of the secret negotiations,
which gave Iraq almost unprecedented control over U.S. troops in the
period between Jan. 1 and a final U.S. withdrawal from Iraq on Dec. 31,
2011.

first time hit a 16-year high last week, pushing the rolling herd of

MKs urge legal action as settler violence erupts in Hebron

Violent clashes erupted early Thursday between settler activists and
Israeli security forces at a disputed house slated for evacuation in the
West Bank city of Hebron, prompting Israeli and Palestinian officials
alike to call for legal enforcement. The High Court on Sunday ordered
the settlers to vacate the house, after they forged ownership documents.
The settlers were given until noon Wednesday to evacuate voluntarily, a
deadline that expired without heed.
The settlers also scribbled graffiti around Hebron, including spraying
'Mohammed Pig' on the walls of a local mosque and on Palestinian homes
nearby.

Arraignment Set for Cheney, Gonzales in Prisoner Abuse Case

A Texas judge has set an arraignment for Vice President Dick Cheney,
former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and other officials accused of
involvement in prisoner abuse.
Presiding Judge Manuel Banales said Wednesday he will allow them to
waive arraignment or have attorneys present rather than appear in person
Friday.
Banales also said he would issue summonses, not warrants. That allows
them to avoid arrest and the need to post bond.
