Bush Claims Executive Privilege In Valerie Plame Leak

President Bush has asserted executive privilege to prevent Attorney 
General Michael Mukasey from having to comply with a House panel 
subpoena for material on the leak of CIA operative Valerie Plame's identity.

A House committee chairman, meanwhile, held off on a contempt citation 
of Mukasey _ who had requested the privilege claim _ but only as a 
courtesy to lawmakers not present.

Court seeks to stay US executions

The US has been advised not to execute five Mexican nationals on death 
row by the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

The ICJ - the UN's highest court - had previously ruled that the men had 
been denied the right to help from their consulate after their arrests.

US troops abandon Afghan outpost

US and Afghan troops have abandoned a remote village in eastern 
Afghanistan where militants killed nine US soldiers and wounded a dozen 
more on Sunday.

The attack caused the biggest American loss of life in battle in 
Afghanistan since operations began in 2001.

Bush Emphasizes His Opposition to Timetable for Iraq Withdrawal

President Bush said Tuesday that Iraq wanted to include an “aspirational 
goal” for the departure of most foreign troops there in any agreement 
authorizing future American operations, but he reiterated his opposition 
to what he called “an artificial timetable for withdrawal.”

His remarks reflected the growing doubt within the administration that 
the United States could negotiate the sweeping long-term agreement that 
would clear the way for American troops to operate in Iraq for many 
years to come.

China gets ivory imports go-ahead

The UN has given China the green light to bid in a one-off sale of 
ivory. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species 
(Cites) voted in favour of China's request during a meeting being held 
in Geneva.

China joins Japan as approved buyers of government-owned ivory from 
South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe.

Super Rich Tax Cheats Outed by Bank Clerk

Hundreds of super-rich American tax cheats have, in effect, turned 
themselves in to the IRS after a bank computer technician in the tiny 
European country of Liechtenstein came forward with the names of US 
citizens who had set up secret accounts there, according to Washington 
lawyers investigating the scheme.

Senate follows House to override Medicare bill veto

Congress voted Tuesday to override President Bush’s veto of legislation 
that would undo a 10.6 percent cut in Medicare fees to physicians.

The Senate voted 70-26 to override the veto following action by the 
House earlier in the day. The lower chamber voted 383-41 to enact the 
bill over Bush’s objections. In both houses, the votes exceeded the 
two-thirds majority needed to overturn the veto.

Official: US envoy to meet Iranian nuke negotiator

In a break with past Bush administration policy, a top U.S. diplomat 
will for the first time join colleagues from other world powers at a 
meeting with Iran's chief nuclear negotiator, The Associated Press has 
learned.

William Burns, America's third highest-ranking diplomat, will attend 
talks with the Iranian envoy, Saeed Jalili, in Switzerland on Saturday 
aimed at persuading Iran to halt activities that could lead to the 
development of atomic weapons.
