U.S. risks deepening role in Iraqi Shi'ite feud
Monday, 21 April 2008 13:59

Washington has billed the security operation launched last month by
Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki as a defining battle for Iraq between the
rule of law and Iranian-backed outlaw militias dubbed by U.S. officials
as "special groups" that thrive as criminal syndicates.

Pakistan frees pro-Taliban leader and announces peace accord
Monday, 21 April 2008 13:54

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) -- A pro-Taliban leader who sent thousands of
fighters against the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan was freed by
Pakistan on Monday, and an official said his militant group signed a
peace deal with the provincial government in the restive northwest.

The group founded by radical cleric Sufi Muhammad renounced attacks on
government forces in the six-point accord but it will be allowed to
peacefully campaign for the implementation of Islamic law in Pakistan,
provincial government spokesman Faridullah Khan said.

He said the pact was signed by Muhammad's deputy and eight other clerics
and four officials, including three provincial government ministers.

More convicted felons allowed to enlist in Army, Marines
Monday, 21 April 2008 13:38

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Under pressure to increase their numbers, the Army
and Marine Corps have sharply raised the number of recruits with felony
convictions they are admitting to the services.

Data released by a congressional committee shows that the number of
soldiers admitted to the Army with felony records jumped from 249 in
2006 to 511 in 2007. And the number of Marines with felonies rose from
208 to 350.

The bulk of the crimes involved were burglaries, other thefts, and drug
offenses, but nine involved sex crimes and six involved manslaughter or
vehicular homicide convictions. Several dozen Army and Marine recruits
had aggravated assault or robbery convictions, including incidents
involving weapons.

Australia extends rights over sea
Monday, 21 April 2008 13:33

Australia has increased its share of the seabed by 2.5 million sq km,
after the UN agreed an extension.

Its continental shelf will be extended by five times the size of France,
giving it rights to explore new areas for oil and gas.

Australia had worked for 15 years on the claim.

Some of the new areas lie beside Antarctic territories, but the
resources minister said there would be no exploration of Antarctic waters.

Clerics killed in Somali mosque
Monday, 21 April 2008 13:28

The bodies of 10 people have been found in a mosque in the Somali
capital, after two days of clashes between Ethiopian troops and insurgents.

Local residents blame the killings on the Ethiopians, who are backing
the government against Islamist fighters.

Six of the dead are religious leaders from the Tabliq Sufi sect, which
is not involved in the conflict.

545 People Responsible for America's Woes
Monday, 21 April 2008 12:41

One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one president and nine Supreme
Court justices - 545 human beings out of the 300 million - are directly,
legally, morally and individually responsible for the domestic problems
that plague this country.

I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem
was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its
Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered
but private central bank.

I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason
They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator,
a congressman or a president to do one cotton- picking thing. I don't
care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The
politician has the power to accept or reject it.

No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator's
responsibility to determine how he votes.

Global Warming and the Iraq War
Monday, 21 April 2008 12:11

The war is responsible for at least 141 million metric tons of carbon
dioxide equivalent (MMTCO2e) since March 2003. To put this in
perspective, CO2 released by the war to date equals the emissions from
putting 25 million more cars on the road in the US this year.

Between March 2003 and October 2007 the US military in Iraq purchased
more than 4 billion gallons of fuel from the Defense Energy Support
Center, the agency responsible for procuring and supplying petroleum
products to the Department of Defense. Burning these fuels has directly
produced nearly 39 million metric tons of CO2 Just transporting 4
billion gallons of fuel to the military in Iraq consumed at least as
much fuel as was delivered nearly doubling overall fuel-related emissions.

Emissions from the Iraq War to date are nearly two and a half times
greater than what would be avoided between 2009 and 2016 were California
to implement the auto emission regulations it has proposed, but that the
Bush Administration has struck down.

White House challenges release of visitor logs
Monday, 21 April 2008 11:47

The Bush administration is challenging a court ruling that White House
visitor logs are public documents, saying releasing the records would
infringe on the separation of powers.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington wants to use the
Secret Service documents to show the influence religious conservatives
have on the Bush administration. The government argues that proves the
records are related to the White House, not to the workings of the
Secret Service, and should not be released.

TVNL Comment: They also want to hide their contact with every corporate
criminal in the country!

Government authority is crossing a line
Monday, 21 April 2008 11:39

Moreover, Congress has ceded too much power to Chertoff. In 2005, it
granted him the authority to waive laws while prohibiting federal
appeals courts from reviewing his decisions, undermining the system of
checks and balances enshrined in our Constitution. Defenders of Wildlife
and the Sierra Club have filed petitions with the Supreme Court
challenging the legality of the waiver.

In the meantime, Chertoff has free rein to destroy fragile ecosystems,
flout our laws and trample on the rights of citizens like Tamez. How sad
that we are willing to undermine our Constitution for an expensive,
wasteful monument to American insecurity.
