The purpose of this guide is to provide potential language professionals
with an introduction to the translation industry. This guide will not only
discuss the minimum requirements, skills and equipment that are needed in
order to enter this fast-growing career, but also describe the pitfalls and
difficulties of the profession.

When I started translating fourteen years ago, no such guide or information
was readily available and I had to learn almost everything you will read
here by trial and error. It is my hope that this guide will help you avoid
making some of the same mistakes I made when I first started translating and
help lead you to an enjoyable and prosperous career.

I have made every effort to keep this guide as simple and as straightforward
as possible while still providing you all of the essentials that you need to
know. In addition, I will point you towards many other resources where you
can go and continue the learning process.

This 50-page guide is offered in electronic format only (.pdf). You can view
and print this book with Adobe Reader, a free program. If you do not have
Adobe or another .pdf reader installed on your computer, a link will be
provided to you.
