Hi all,

Just got my Toshiba Tecra 740CDT - 166MMX/144Mb Ram and CDRom running
under W98SE - to burn a to DVD RW by virtue of a PCMCIA-IEEE1394
Firewire interface card to an external Gericom DVD writer.

It was slow at about 1Mb/min, but it is very useful to have this
facility as a backup should my newer laptop fail (again!) as I will be
able to get to essential stored data still.

Although I have a second HDD for this machine with W2k installed, it
would only work under W98 for some stupid reason! My PCMCIA-USB 2.0
card wouldn't work either, so was totally surprised that a Firewire
card worked almost out the box! You need a revised file of the MS
website, but no drivers for the device were needed.

So, it only goes to show that you can get some use from older
technology against all odds.

Oh and my older Thinkpad 760ED *will* see the USB 2.0 PCMCIA card
under W98Se and many memory devices connected through it. that's only
a 133MMX... Not tried the Firewire on it yet...
