My guess is that it's someone's misguided label for a Christian name.
Perhaps "Sunday name" means "Christian name" without having to define
it as such in a country where Japanese Christians are such a small
minority or when a Japanese wishes not offend a non-Christian (e.g., a
Muslim) when requesting a first name.
In countries with larger Christian populations, there's no expressed
need for such a term. In fact, a "Sunday name" can be fashionable. In
Singapore, it's been the fashion for the past two or three decades
among the non-Christian Chinese population to give their children a
Christian name in addition to a Chinese name.
