I don't hate America. I love America despite knowing (some of) its flaws, which is
more meaningful than being completely ignorant or blindly obedient. What I would
like MANY people to do is to realize how much of an advantage they have had over
many other people, before being so quick to judge them on their current situation.
If, for example, a Japanese man was prevented by law from becoming an attorney
despite excellent performance in school or on a bar exam, was prevented by law
from owning the businesses he began, or was interned by executive order and lost
most of what he had, we should not simply judge him for spending the remainder of
his life as a domestic servant. If I ever live or die in more comfort than he, I
will never delude myself as to think that I deserve what I have more, or that I am
better than he was. No, I thank God that I was born in a better time and place.
