I think that that photo was taken in Canberra in January last year during a
pretty massive bushfire. If it is indeed the image I'm thinking of, then it
is real with some post processing (at least that was what was published in
the local paper 'The Canberra Times"). Can't remember of the identity of the
guy who took the shot though.
