If you have a pc connected to the internet in Japan that is reliable, you
can start the fax service on it, and let it answer the phone and be your
fax machine.
Then it's just a matter of getting the fax files from the PC in Japan to your hut
in the Alps. You could connect directly to the PC, and have the folder that
holds the faxes be available from an ftp login. Or you could run something
like cygwin, have an ssh service run on the pc, and then just scp the files
to your hut. Or you could even schedule a task to copy the fax files to an
intermediate site that you also have access to (might be easier than setting
up sshd or some remote pc program on you faxpc).
A full-page fax tends to be a 150kb tiff file on my win2k box.
