As Ed and Dave didn't quite say, tell your friend to either change his 
schedule, or change his itinerary. Travel by train will be extremely 
difficult, especially with family, and driving won't be much better (it 
took me 16 hours to drive from Tokushima to Okazaki last August). If he 
has absolutely no choice as to his schedule and the only time he can 
come to Japan is during Obon, then fine of course - but he'll need to 
choose other destinations. In which region or city is he going to be based?
