Hi...

Could be an SCR - but I can't think why :)

Perhaps if it was an AC supply, but he mentioned it
was reverse polarity, so...

Think he's stuck - has to beg the manufacturer to
either sell him one of whatever it is; or at least
tell him what it is :)

Last resort would be to find a schematic I guess...
