Yes, for one woman on JET working out of the area near Akitsu, Hiroshima in
1993, one school was on an island with one student. When children reach junior
high, they must take the ferry somewhere else. And when that child becomes
junior high age, that school was to be closed down completely. On the JET
Program, my junior high school had directories of public schools in the
prefecture. I looked through it to see how small schools got. I've seen at
least one other school with just one student (don't remember name or where),
one principal, one vice principal (they had teaching duties), and one other
person to make the lunch.

Late last year was the British school advertising for a teacher for a single
pupil, and the stir it caused, postponing class, when a teacher was found.
