Ok, fair enough. I haven't read the manga at all.

On the other hand, having watched the first episode of Re: Cutie Honey last
night as recommended and linked by EvaMonkey (http://www.evamonkey.com),
the only anime Hideaki Anno has directed since Evangelion, I'm not inclined
to take him seriously on anything any more...

He's definitely out of his early-90s depressive period, anyway.
