I remember an internal flight in Japan (Haneda to Komatsu) I took in early
summer 2000. They didn't allow me to take my Swiss Army Knife on my person
during the flight. The cabin crew took it at the departure gate security
check and I got it safely back after baggage claims in Komatsu.
Other than airlines, I think you'll be OK with a pocket knife on your
person.
