The lesson to take home is that if you are in an accident, call the cops and photodocument the accident immediately -- nowadays these can usually both be done via the cell phone. I am one of those who think the ability to report an accident to the police is actually a benefit. Where I am from, the police won't come to an accident unless there is an injury. That is why if you are ever in an accident in San Francisco, I would recommend you think you may have hurt your neck, and ask for an ambulance just to be sure. That way the cops will come out and you will get a report of the accident. And even if you are at fault, you definitely want a report of the accident -- something our hapless JET found out the hard way. Incidentally, I often see accidents driving around Okinawa. In about 90% of the cases, at least one of the drivers is American. Which seems to back up the Japanese stereotype that furriners can't drive -- at least not in Japan. -- Regards, Ryan Ginstrom ryang@gol.com
