I have used Sandisk and Lexar CF devices in my 2500, 990 and 5700 for
years now. The 5700 has logged over 2500 pics mostly in fine pic
quality setting and some of the other quality settings as well. The
990 has taken over 3500 pics as well. In addition to the CF cards that
came with the cameras, they are all 256 MB. 

It could be the 5700, but I would bet on the CF cards as the problem.

What Mfgr CF card are you using?
