I think the world is a lot less bleak now than in years past. But A)
people have more access to information, and thus know more about the
bleakness; and B) kids really aren't needed like they were in years
gone by when most families had farms and such, and could always sell
off the little buggers if they got to be too much trouble. I think the
'world is bleak' excuse (I've got friends who say similar things)
really means "I'm enjoying my life without kids so why ruin it?"
