On a mac I use a free widget, sms 3.3 ( http://keakaj.com ) to send to 
all kinds of mobile phones with no difficulties, though I've never 
tried sending them internationally.  It reads directly from your 
address book.app, but you do have to tell it which provider each number 
is associated with (sprint, cingular, etc.).
