Liar
In an effort to start some more on-topic exchanges around here, I'll ask
something about EoE: When Ritsuko, Gendo, and Rei are in Terminal Dogma, right
before Gendo shoots her, Ritsuko calls Gendo a liar (at least in the subtitling
that I have). Obviously this is what Gendo is, but what lie specifically is she
referring to in this instance?
As a sidenote on EoE, one of the things that this movie impressed upon me was
the zeal with which otherwise good people can commit attrocities if they think
the people they're fighting are terrorists. The troops invading NERV HQ thought
that NERV was trying to commit crimes against humanity by initiating Third
Impact, when actually the troops themselves were being used to help this
happen, and NERV, except at the top levels, was trying to stop it. The troops
thought they were fighting terrorists, when in reality they were inflicting
terror on innocents and on people who were really on the troops' own side, if
they would just take the wool out from in front of their eyes and realize it.
This has an obvious bearing on the current war America finds itself in. We
must punish the scum, but not be so eager to seek retribution that we discard
the legal protections meant to keep the accused (citizen and not-citizen) safe
from the whims of the mob. Refusing to list detainees as POWs, ousting regimes
seen to be friendly to terrorists, bombing when you're not certian if the
target is civilian -- these must be done sometimes, but they must be done with
regret and with a mind for justice, not revenge.
Just some thoughts.
