If you're interested in great feats of engineering, you could take the
Alpine Route from Toyama (close to Fushiki), up over the mountains, then
through them to the Kurobe Dam and on through to Omachi on the other
side, by a variety of means of transport. Very impressive.

The trick will be to take it when it's not _too_ crowded. It's snowed-in
over the winter, so they have to dig out the route in spring--the buses
run between very high walls of snow. We were there in October (got the
first snow of the year there), but were told there's often a week or so
before Golden Week (the end of April and beginning of May when there are
several public holidays, so everyone goes on holiday then) when the
route is open but not yet busy.
If you have more time, take the trip up on the Kurobe Gorge narrow-gauge
railway first (but you have to come back down again).
