Surf? And get my skin scraped off by the coral reef. No thanks... ;-)
(Now, you COULD argue that too much beer might also lead to scraped off
skin - face hits pavement style - but as an experienced pub surfer and
once-wanna-be paramedic, i know that even the best medicine will do bad
things to you if you have too much of it.) And i haven't even told you
of the most interesting, hm, aspect (?), of Okinawa life yet (Ryan
doesn't even need to talk about it anymore - he married one of them.)
Yes, there ARE spots here where one can surf. There is even one that is
within cycling range for me: "Aja Reef" - shown under number 17 in the
list at http://www.mensoresurfing.com/surfpoint.htm and named "Aja Port"
on the map at http://www.wannasurf.com/spot/Asia/Japan/Okinawa/ - but
the scenery there is not exactly breathtaking (think: reclaimed land
with modern port facilities). To get to any of the nicer surf spots you
need to find off-work hours that are clustered over at least a day or
two (and not, as in my case, a few hours every day), have a car, and
enjoy driving on congested roads out of and into the Naha conurbation.
Nah... my life's happiness comes in small (but not too small) dosages
sprinkled throughout each day (partly due that for the last year my work
schedule has meant that 90% of my clients were of the more interesting
gender, and although that percentage will be lower for this school year,
the absolute numbers will be up).
Surfing? Sure... my way...
