Another idea: a friend of mine traveled to New Zealand once via Bali,
and that was cheaper than many flights inside Japan: 7 Man return (!!!)
But that low fare is probably no longer available, it may have been a
promotional fare to draw tourists back to Bali, after the bomb attack
there. But if you take your time and stay over here and there on the
way, you might perhaps be able to piece an affordable trip together via
Indonesia, Australia, and Chile... or via Taiwan, Malaysia, UAE, Spain -
who knows...

How about charter flights between Japan and Brazil? Considering the many
Brazilians with Japanese ancestors who have reasons to travel between
the two countries, i imagine there might be such flights...

In any case it often pays to check all possible airlines and
combinations of airlines - i have several times organised flights
between Europe and Canada as well as flights between Saudi Arabia and
Europe/North America, and i found at times major savings by going
unusual routes and using unusual combinations of airlines. I did the
research first and then asked the travel agents to check availabilities,
confirm fares, and make bookings, when i had what i wanted.
