As far as I know, you can still use your old German driving license
until end of next year. After that, you will have to change it to the
new European type. And don't worry about the age of the picture. Until
he died three years ago, my Grandfather still used his original
license, issued some time in the 1930's...

I don't think you will need an international driving license for most
European countries. But you may better check in some German or other
European newsgroup since there will be more knowledgable people than
here...
