Since you've tried the manual wheel and verified it is OK...

1. Check the drivers to make sure they are compatible with your media
players. A quick check to the MS Update site should verify whether you
need new drivers or not.

2. Check your Events listing for any errors.
START> PROGRAMS> ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS> EVENT VIEWER
then select SYSTEM in the left-hand window. Scroll down the right-hand
window and look for any red stop signs or yellow caution signs. Click on
them and then click on the More Information link in the pop-up window.

3a. Verify you haven't turned off the system sound.
START> SETTINGS> CONTROL PANEL> SOUNDS AND AUDIO DEVICES
On the first tabbed window in the pop-up, uncheck MUTE if it is checked.
Though not necessary to correct your problem, I recommend checking Place
Volume Icon in the Taskbar. It makes getting to volume preferences much
easier and faster.

3b. While still on that pop-up, click SPEAKER VOLUME and drag the sliders
all the way to the right, then click OK.

3c. Click ADVANCED and make sure you have some speakers selected. By no
means should you have NO SPEAKERS as your choice. DESKTOP SPEAKERS tends
to work in most situations, but you may need to play with this setting.
Click OK to get back to the basic Sounds pop-up window.

3d. Now click on the top tab that says AUDIO. Click the top-most VOLUME
button (for your speaker sets) and on the pop-up you see next, make sure
that nothing is Muted, and the volume is set all the way up to the top for
each device. Click the X in the top-right corner to close that window,
then click OK to exit from the basic Sounds pop-up window.

4. When you run your media player (whichever you choose to run), check to
ensure you haven't MUTED the sound. The players you mentioned, plus almost
every other player I've ever seen, gives the user the option to mute the
sound from the player. It's usually a little icon that needs to be clicked
to toggle the sound back on. Move your mouse around your player and click
on the various icons if you aren't positive this does not apply in your
case (sorry if that sounds elementary, but I don't know your skill level
and there are people who accidentally click things and don't know that
they did).

Luck!
