Good question!

My desktop is the Pro version (also SP2). I never tried connecting 
anywhere else until you asked. So I gave it run...

No problem. It, too, connects just fine to the neighbor's open, out-of-
the-box router.

Well, if you decide to give it a go in the future, let us know. I'm sure 
we'll be around to try to help you configure the thing so it actually 
works (or determine why it absolutely won't, in which case you'll know 
which part to replace if you so choose).
