If an American has a bachelor's degree, they can "teach" English, and
make a fair living with as much or little responsibility as they like,
and probably enjoy more free time and paid holidays than a Japanese
worker would have available or be willing to ask for. People from other
countries would be able to work in Japan on a working holiday visa.

I did not envy the lives of the average Japanese salaried workers, or
women with responsibilities at home.
