I think it has to do with the increasing cult popularity of japanese
entertainment, which is is sort of the "last straw" on top of other
positive characteristics associated with japan and its culture;

AS for why americans are in particular, another theory is that large
parts of america have turned in to a fucking shithole (well the south
is the usual culprit as usual but still)

Anyway, the above points inspired me to take japanese, which in turn is
why I want to live in japan.   Its kind of a curse really; It would
make a lot more sense to move to Canada or europe.
