I'm planning on taking a holiday from late this month and can't decide which to go to. I haven't been to either place before. Probable dates are May 26th to June 6th. Shiretoko has its attractiveness, but I'm worried that it might still be too cold for hiking (trails still under snow), and/or that I'd have to hike alone around the same time that bears come out of hibernation. Ogasawara has its appeal. I'd basically island hop by boat, but I have no diving experience. Is it going to be too cold for snorkeling? Will accommodation be open yet etc? If anyone has been to either could you let me know some of the pros and cons you may have experienced?
