If this were the case (the family bit), is it correct to say that there
are probably other, better options available?

Sounds like an English teacher heading back to grad school and not
wanting to give up his visa (and not wanting to get tied down when he
comes back). My guess is that whatever job the OP has it will probably
still be an option when he returns, and he won't really *lose* anything
by giving up his visa. Pure speculation, of course.
