In quite a lot of Japanese poetry, the tendency was to use the hiragana
script much of the time, with just a few kanji thrown in from time to
time. Without really knowing, I think this may have been due to the
fact that many poetical forms were based on having a fixed number of
syllables, which could be seen more clearly if the syllabary were used
instead of pictograms.
