Well, there is a person's "real" name, that is, what they were born
with, or what they have legally changed it to, as opposed to a stage
name or professional name. For me, that would be Eric Kenji
Takabayashi, but I hate going by my full name, and usually choose to go
by "Eric", "Eric Takabayashi" in English or "Takabayashi Kenji"in
Japanese. For the sake of having my children's last names the same as
mine, my wife changed her name, to match mine, and her records and ID
reflect that. However, being Japanese, she and my children were
immediately allowed to use kanji for "our" last name, while I am the
same katakana I always was.

Then there is the "official name" as it is rendered in any variety of
ways on valid forms of ID in Japan as on a person's alien registration,
health certificate, or driver's license, though probably not in kanji
for someone who is not of Chinese or Korean ethnicity or nationality,
which is the point I and you were trying to make on this thread which a
certain someone has a lot of difficulty believing. I certainly have
never been allowed to use kanji on anything useful as valid forms of
ID, and have been told a number of times I cannot. Unless perhaps a
handwritten application for a handwritten fill in your name public
library card is official ID.
