A large space (about 6 lines worth) has invaded the body of my text.
When I reveal formatting, it's clear that there are no spacebars,
carraige returns, or page breaks in that region.  How can I get rid of
it?

I do have footnotes on other pages.  I don't see why that should be
related to the problem, but who knows?
