I got basically the same problem.  I liked using the camera a lot.  Now
when I try to turn it on, I get an E18 error message on the display
which indicates a lens problem.  I mailed it to  Cannon last week. 
I'll probally get it fixed if they charge me the flat rate because I
can't find a similar camera for that price. I won't pay more than $150,
though.
