Well, that's exactly the same as the UK one, except that the S/PDIF line 
reads:

1xS/PDIF (optical), type: memory slots (1 to configure)
number of expansion types: 2

and it is listed under "expansion" rather than "interfaces".

It was that which I thought should be connected to the third jack socket 
(out of the four along the front edge of the computer). It is certainly 
not a standard 3.5mm jack as far as I can see. But I'm still at a loss 
to know how to connect that up. Maybe to another optical S/PDIF output. 
There is no help in the manual, yet the manual indicates that it is 
there and not optional according to the model.

Funny you should say that. I did consider buying the computer in France 
(I live there for part of the year) but I didn't fancy having an AZERTY 
keyboard. I bought a Sony Vaio laptop for my wife in France a year ago 
because she prefers the AZERTY keyboard so she doesn't need a new one 
yet!

I've already looked at the BIOS but there's nowhere that it can be 
configured.
