I wouldn't nessesarily say the cast of JP were "unknowns" per se, rather
they weren't big-name stars (well, maybe Jeff Goldblum) but Sam Neill and
Sir Richard Attenbourgh and Laura Dern were known actors, just not the
high-powered stars that seem to dominate most big-budget films these days.
Heck, LOTR is full of what you might call "unknowns", with Viggo Mortensen,
Orlando Bloom, Hugo Weaving, Sean Bean, Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan.
Even the better-known actors aren't exactly big names, well, maybe Elijah
Wood and Liv Tyler. I still think Weaving would be perfect for Gendo, he has
that intense look in his eyes, and he does come off as being mysterious and
intimidating with sunglasses in the Matrix films as Agent Smith. Rickman,
OTOH, while he seems to have gravitated more towards comidic roles, does
still provide a sinister ambiance in the role of Professer Snape in the
Harry Potter films, so he is also a posibility.
