This was an automated process from what I heard. That is it really had
nothing to do with the desires of the Eva.

That just tells me that it may be a personality implant of Rei. That's
just an idle idea though don't put a lot of stock into it. It's not been
explored yet. Well, it might have, I don't remember.

Well, first, Rei's soul is in Rei, it's Rei's purpose to hold that soul
more so then it is to pilot the Eva. Second if Rei's soul was in Unit 00
then what the hell is in Rei? When Rei is soulless we refer to her as a
clone in a tank. That's Rei without the soul, they don't do a lot of
piloting in the series.
