In short, they paid for everything. The producer stumbled across the website 
of the Japanese Railway Society, to which I belong, and eventually collared 
me after other members managed to make excuses for not getting involved.
I got a copy of the programme on DVD, but I'm not technically proficient 
enough to make copies. I put one screenshot up on the web for those 
interested...
