I think that Ayanami does kind of need it.  If you think about it, when
others show to genuine kindness, it truly touches her heart.  Think of her
response to the concern both Ikari's showed when her Eva went nuts.
Similarly, think of the few interactions between her and Shinji... Shinji
clearing her room, his attempts to casual conversation in the lift...  her
talking to Toji about Shinji before his activation.  Okay, maybe not Shinji
falling on her in the nude, but I'm sure you get my drift. :)

Ayanami seems to conceal her emotions, and many seem to forget that when it
comes to think about this.

I think you might be looking at it a bit too shallowly, but I'll refrain.
Personal reasons would make me look like a nutcase.  And last time I said
something, Disaster said "Anger is Bad". :)
