a couple of cites -

"The role of the cave in paleolithic religions appears to have been
decidedly important. Then too, the cave and the labyrinth continue to have a
function of the first importance in the initiation rites of other archaic
cultures (as, for example, in Malekula); both, indeed, are concrete symbols
of passages into another world, of a descent to the underworld" p.51. mircea
eliade, shamanism.

on 'difficult passages' p485 -
"the symbolism of the "strait gate" and the "dangerous bridge" is bound up
with the symbolism of what we hav called the "paradoxical passage" because
it sometimes proves to be an impossibility or a situation from which there
is no escape. It will be remembered that candidate shamans or the heroes of
cerain myths sometimes find themselves in apparently desperate situations.
They must go "where night and day meets", or find a gate in a wall, or go up
to the sky through a passage that opens but for an instant, pass between two
constantly moving millstones, two rocks that clash together, through the
jaws of a monster, and the like [like supermario etc]. As Coomaraswamy
rightly saw. all these mythical images express the need to transcend
opposites, to abolish the popularity typical of the human condition, in
order to attain the ultimate reality...[and so on] In the myth the
"paradoxical" passage emphatically testififes that he who succedes in
accomplishing it has transcended the human condition; he is a shaman, a
hero, or a "spirit", and indeed the "paradoxical" passage can be
accomplished only by one who is "spirit"."

daidalonics for the post-human, cyborgs of the world, the other, ay :)

an interesting drum.. the drums has the world view printed on it which is
their maze adventure - 'd' - so you'd have both the processing unit (drum/
stick) and the image.. and the other stuff., chant, dance, speaking in
tongue, curious codework, heuristics, eurythmics, trying to get out of the
algorithmic..
