In fact, one of my neighbors (I don't know which one) has a completely unregulated, unsafe, out-of-the-box open network that everyone on the street can connect to. We've all discussed it but everyone denies it's their network. Still, there it is, SSID=3DNetgear, open network. No limits on connecting devices, no passwords, no WPA, no nothing. If I didn't already have my own service, and I could rely upon whoever to keep that link open for years to come, I'd be inclined to discontinue paying for my own service... Hi Frisco... I have one neighbor (and all I know they are very close to me, but who?) that also has an open wireless network. And sometimes my laptop automatically wants to connect up to my neighbors network instead of mine. So I have to check this before I do anything. There are some things to think about if anybody wants to do this. One, if they know what they are doing, they could be running a packet sniffer and can see everything you are doing on the Internet. Your passwords and everything! So while free Internet might sound nice, but if they are capturing your passwords, credit card numbers, etc. Then it isn't really a good deal, now is it? And since nobody is admitting it that it isn't their system, the very same in my case as well. I suspect this is exactly what they are up to. As I believe they are running open systems on purpose so they can capture information they can later use. Just something to think about.
