Actually, it happened at about the same time as they brought back Coke. 
There are conspiracy theorists that believe that they did the on/off 
thing with New Coke to draw attention away from the cane sugar/fructose 
switch. Mexican Coke and Australian Coke still use cane sugar, and are 
highly prized by some. I can taste the difference, but it isn't enough 
of a change to bother me.
